Twitter removes accounts linked to governments

Twitter took down thousands of accounts linked to Egypt, Saudi Arabia and other countries on Thursday.

The social media company said they had taken direction from those governments or promoted pro-government content.

In violation of Twitter's policy.

Twitter erased more than 2,500 accounts in the Egypt-based El Fagr network because it created fake accounts to amplify messages critical of Iran, Qatar, and Turkey.

Another 3,000 fake accounts were removed from a single IP range in Honduras.

Investigation found they belonged to a staff member retweeting the president's account on behalf of the government.

5,000-plus accounts associated with Saudi Arabia were also taken down.

They tweeted praise for the Saudi leadership and criticism of Qatar and Turkish activity in Yemen.

A total of 8,558 accounts working to promote Serbia’s ruling party and its leader was also removed.
