[Warning: spoilers for This Is Us season 4, episode 4, “Flip a Coin,” ahead]

"Don’t come at him like this," one This Is Us fan begged on Twitter after Randall and Tess both agreed that Deja should not be dating an older boy who has a child...a detail the girl conveniently forgot to mention when telling them about Malik. This Is Us kind of warned us the first meeting wouldn't go well.

In episode 4, "Flip a Coin," Beth is holding an event for the opening of her dream dance studio, and she's got a lot on her mind, including a visit from her mother and a dead opossum in the walls—that was thankfully not a dead opossum family. Things get even more stressed when Deja's crush Malik shows up to show his support and introduce himself to the Pearsons for the first time.

At first, it goes well! Randall makes his usual dad jokes and compliments Malik on his firm handshake. He's not thrilled that Malik is two years older than Deja, but he respects him and appreciates that, physically, Randall could "squash him like a bug" if necessary. Then Malik drops the "daughter" word...a bunch of times.

Randall asks what he means by "daughter" and Malik tells him about his baby girl, Janelle. Malik has full custody and raises her with the help of his parents. In response, Randall pretty much has no chill.

While Beth and Randall might be on the exact same page about Malik right now, This Is Us fans pretty much stan the kid, especially for stepping up for his kid.

I wouldn't get too worried, though. Like Twitter user @jentrification points out, this episode also shows how Beth's mom didn't approve of Randall from the moment they met (has any person ever been so wrong in their life?!). It's fair to say that Beth and Randall will come around, but even if they don't, Deja is clearly going to make up her own mind.
