Update, 9/23:

Gwendoline Christie has seen your memes about her seemingly holy attire at the Emmys last night, and she agrees: she did kind of dress like Jesus. The Game of Thrones actress re-posted a photo from the Instagram account @betches this morning, which shows her in her robe-like Gucci dress, edited into da Vinci's "The Last Supper" painting.

"The most stupendous, unimagined night," she said of the awards ceremony. "Thank you for the extraordinary outpouring of love and support. The greatest privilege for @gameofthrones to win Best Drama for our last series."

Christie was nominated in the Supporting Actress category but lost to Julia Garner of Ozark. Game of Throne still won big, taking home the Outstanding Drama Series award.

Original story, 9/22:

The Emmy Awards got a dose of divine intervention tonight in the form of Gwendoline Christie, who arrived to the 2019 ceremony in a red and white robe from Gucci. Twitter users couldn't help themselves from spotting the religious symbolism in the actress's attire, comparing the majestic, billowy ensemble to Jesus's classic robes, ancient Roman togas, or papal uniforms.

Some Game of Thrones fans imagined that this is what Christie's character, Ser Brienne of Tarth, would've worn to her imagined wedding to Jaime Lannister. Perhaps the choice of wearing red, the signature color of House Lannister, gave it away.

Regardless of the comparisons, viewers were stunned by Christie's one-of-a-kind red carpet look. Could anyone other than this fashion-forward star pull off this outfit?

Christie earned her first Emmy nomination, for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama, for her performance in GoT's eighth and final season. Her achievement was especially impressive when it was reported that HBO didn't submit her to be considered for the title, even though the network did so for a number of her other castmates. Instead, Christie submitted herself, and still got nominated.

The actress told the L.A. Times that she vouched for herself "to be in charge of my own destiny." She added, "And I would like to endeavor to give myself opportunities. Particularly when working very hard on something very special and you’ve pushed yourself beyond your limits."

Christie is up against co-stars Lena Headey, Sophie Turner, and Maisie Williams, along with Ozark's Julia Garner, and Killing Eve's Fiona Shaw.
