Two adolescent bald eagles now make Abilene Zoo their home

Two rescued bald eagles now are making their home at the Abilene Zoo.

The eagles, named Sparky and Leu, were rehabilitated at Audubon Center for Birds of Pray in Maitland, Florida.

EagleWatch, which observes nesting and population trends in Florida, identified assistance as a need for the two eagles. They were rescued at about two months of age. They were deemed non-releasable because they could not fly.

Sparky is 15 months and Leu 16 months. They will get the highly identifiable white heads until they are 5 to 7 years old.

The renovation of the local zoo's Elm Creek exhibit now provides a home for the eagles in the Keith Garner Bald Eagle Habitat.

“We thought the upcoming Memorial Day weekend was the perfect time to introduce these majestic birds to thecommunity, honoring those who have died in service to our country, " zoo director Jesse Pottebaum said.

Saturday is Zoolute day at the zoo, with military members, past and present, are admitted at no charge.
