Two-alarm fire engulfs Hood River building supply store

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A two-alarm fire at a building supply store called Hood River firefighters into action early Friday morning.

According to Hood River Fire, a fire broke out at Gorge Building Supply just before 2 a.m. and multiple callers reported that the flames were spreading quickly.

When fire crews arrived, due to the size of the buildings, their level of involvement in the fire and the building’s contents, the fire was swiftly upgraded to two-alarm, calling more crews into action.

Captain Matt Adams with the Hood River Fire Department said they needed as many hands on this as they possibly could to contain it.

“It definitely could have been worse. The crews did an exceptional job to keep it from spreading,” he said. “You know we don’t like to see this kind of damage at all, but we feel really good about being able to limit it to the main building on site.”

Rabaliati was woken by her neighbors when the fire broke out, and said she could feel the heat from the other side of the road.

She said the retail shop was a local staple for five decades.

“It was really cute,” she said. “It had everything you needed and you didn’t have to go far. It had little trinkets the wood, lots of wood and they made cool things.”

The manager of the store said he is currently scouring for anything that might remain in the 100-year-old store.
