Two arrested in connection with attempted carjacking at DeLand Walmart

Police said they have arrested two men in connection with a weekend attempted carjacking at a DeLand Walmart.

Investigators arrested 22-year-old John Torres and 21-year-old Isaiah Thomas early on Sunday morning.

Both men were charged with attempted carjacking and attempted burglary with assault and booked into the Volusia County jail without bond.

According to the police, on Saturday evening the pair approached a 75-year-old man as he was sitting in his car in the parking lot of a Walmart on North Woodland Boulevard.

Investigators said that one of the men opened the driver’s door of the car and told the elderly man to get out.

The man was able to run to the entrance of the store and call for help before the alleged thieves could steal his car.

Police said they believe Thomas and Torres are the same men who attempted to carjack two other people in the Florida Technological College parking lot at 1199 South Woodland Boulevard.

Investigators said during that incident, the carjackers shot the driver before running away.

The victim, whom police say was critically injured in the shooting, was taken to a nearby hospital.

The passenger was not injured.

Police said they have not charged Torres or Thomas with the shooting, only that the two are suspects and the case remains under investigation.
