Two arrested in connection to a reported shoplifting of cash and cigarettes from Cumberland Farms in Southington

Two Hartford residents were arrested in connection to a reported shoplifting in Southington on Friday morning, according to police.

Two cash registers, over $850 and 11 cartons of cigarettes were shoplifted from the Cumberland Farms on Queen Street, according to the Southington Police Department. In total, nearly $2,900 worth of goods and cash were allegedly taken.

A white Nissan Quest was seen fleeing the scene, with a suspect wearing a red shirt and another suspect wearing a black shirt, police said. The same vehicle was seen on Waverly Street in Hartford about an hour later by members of the Greater Hartford Auto Theft Task Force, and the suspects matching that description were located.

Officers arrested the suspects and matched their identities to camera footage from the Cumberland Farms. A search of the suspected vehicle led to the recovery of “numerous cartons of cigarettes, plastic money clips from the cash registers and money scattered throughout the interior compartment,” according to police.

Kevin Marshall, 57, and Dennis Pipkin, 54, of Hartford were arrested and charged. Both were charged with third-degree larceny, third-degree conspiracy to commit larceny and second-degree criminal mischief, police said.

Initially reported as a robbery, it was determined to be a shoplifting following further investigation, police said.

Marshall and Pipken were held on $25,000 bonds and were scheduled to appear in New Britain Superior Court on June 13.
