Two arrested in Smyth County drug investigation

MARION, Va. (WJHL) — A search of two Marion apartments led to the discovery of methamphetamine and fentanyl, according to authorities.

The Smyth County Sheriff’s Office said it executed simultaneous search warrants Sunday at 212 East Main St. as part of a months-long investigation into meth and fentanyl distribution.

Inside the apartments, investigators found a “large quantity” of powdered fentanyl and six ounces of meth.

Two people were reportedly arrested: Steven Michael Enfield and Jeremy Lee Ball.

Enfield was charged with:

  • Intent to commit an act of terrorism, possess, use, sell, give, distribute, or manufacture a weapon of terrorism (fentanyl)

  • Transport into the Commonwealth with the intent to sell or distribute one ounce more of a Schedule I or II controlled substance

  • Conspire to sell, give, or distribute a controlled substance classified in Schedule I or II

  • Possess a controlled substance classified in Schedule I or II with the intent to manufacture, sell, give, or distribute it

Ball was charged with:

  • While unlawfully possessing a controlled substance classified in Schedule I or II of the Drug Control Act, simultaneously with knowledge and intent possess a firearm

  • With the intent to commit an act of terrorism, possess, use, sell, give, distribute, or manufacture a weapon of terrorism (fentanyl)

  • Transport into the Commonwealth with the intent to sell or distribute one ounce or more of a Schedule I or II controlled substance

  • Conspire to sell, give, or distribute a controlled substance classified in Schedule I or II

  • Possess a controlled substance classified in Schedule I or II with the intent to manufacture, sell, give, or distribute it

  • Felony assault on a law enforcement officer

Both suspects were being held in the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail without bond, according to the sheriff’s office.

Several agencies were involved in the execution of the search warrants, including the Marion Police Department, Smyth County commonwealth’s attorney’s office, and the Holston River Regional Drug Task Force.
