Two arrests made in downtown death investigation

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — San Diego police have identified and arrested two suspects in connection with the assault and subsequent death of a man late last month, a release announced Thursday.

On March 21, around 6:20 a.m., SDPD received a call reporting a battery of a homeless man in the 900 block of 4th Avenue in the Gaslamp Quarter neighborhood.

Upon arrival, police and medics found an unresponsive man on the sidewalk with an apparent head injury. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

At the time, authorities believed his injuries were non-life-threatening. However, on March 29, SDPD’s Homicide Unit learned the man had died from his injuries.

After investigating, detectives determined the man died from blunt force trauma to his head during the assault on March 21. The victim was identified as Charles Hughes, 38, of San Diego.

According to Thursday’s release, two suspects were identified in this case — Ashley Bonk, 28, of Chula Vista and a 17-year-old woman whose name is not being released due to her being a minor.

On Monday, around 7:45 a.m., a police officer found Bonk near the 1200 block of Park Boulevard. She was subsequently arrested and booked into Las Colinas County Jail for one count of murder.

The 17-year-old woman was found Wednesday around 4 p.m. in the 1100 block of C Street and taken into custody without incident, the release said. She will be booked into San Diego County Juvenile Hall for one count of murder.
