These two bands sold over 10 million albums together. They’ll rock Boise outdoors

Two pillars of the 1990s festival circuit are teaming up for a trek to Boise — and a trip down jam-band memory lane.

Rock bands Blues Traveler and Big Head Todd and the Monsters will perform Friday, July 14, at Outlaw Field at the Idaho Botanical Garden. The co-headlining show, which will start at 7 p.m., is part of the groups’ Blue Monsters Tour.

Tickets become available to the general public starting at 10 a.m. Friday at Ticketmaster. General-admission entry will cost $49.50, or $44.50 for Idaho Botanical Garden members (who will be able to purchase tickets early).

Blues Traveler and Big Head Todd and the Monsters have decades of history together. Both acts formed in the 1980s before going platinum in the ’90s.

Blues Traveler achieved greater mainstream success. Led by harmonica shredder John Popper, the New Jersey band landed its first hit, “But Anyway,” in 1990. But Blues Traveler went stratospheric five years later. The Grammy-winning radio smash “Run-Around” helped Blues Traveler’s fourth album, “Four,” go six times platinum. The band has sold more than 8.75 million records in the United States, and over 9 million records worldwide, according to bestsellingalbums.org. Other sources put that number at more than 10 million combined units.

Fronted by singer-guitarist Todd Mohr, Big Head Todd and the Monsters has sold over a million albums. Formed in Colorado, the band invaded early-’90s radio airwaves with melodic singles such as “Broken Hearted Savior,” “Bittersweet” and “Circle.”

After Blues Traveler started the tie-dye-friendly H.O.R.D.E. tour in 1992, Big Head Todd and the Monsters became a familiar face on the annual journey, which lasted seven summers.
