Two Bergen schools honored with national Blue Ribbon awards

Nine schools throughout the state, including two in Bergen County, have received federal recognition for student achievement, the state Education Department announced Tuesday.

The federal Department of Education announced the recipients of the national Blue Ribbon award for high student achievement. The award recognizes schools for overall academic performance.

“This prestigious recognition affirms the dedication of our educators, the resilience of our students, and the support of our communities,” the state’s acting Education Commissioner Angelica Allen-McMillan said in a statement. “It highlights New Jersey's commitment to excellence in education and showcases the exceptional work happening in our schools. These National Blue Ribbon schools serve as shining examples of what is possible when we prioritize innovation, inclusivity, and a rigorous pursuit of academic excellence."

The program is aimed at recognizing outstanding schools that have high overall academic achievement or success in closing the achievement gap among diverse groups of students they serve.

The two Bergen County schools recognized were Luther Lee Emerson School in Demarest and Washington Irving School 4 in Garfield.

The other New Jersey schools recognized were:

  • Haddonfield Public Schools – J.F. Tatem Elementary School.

  • Monmouth County Vocational School District – High Technology High School.

  • Mendham Borough School District – Hilltop Elementary School.
