Two Brooklyn men charged with murder, attempted murder in Newburgh

CITY OF NEWBURGH - Two Brooklyn men have been charged with the murder of one man and the attempted murder of another in the city in April.

Orange County District Attorney David Hoovler and Newburgh Police Commissioner Jose Gomerez announced the arrests in a news release issued Friday evening.

The suspects were identified as Dwayne Hines and Romaine McRae, both 39 and from Brooklyn.

They were taken into custody without incident in Brooklyn on Wednesday by city of Newburgh police detectives and investigators from Hoovler's office. They were charged with second-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder, both felonies.

The arrests stemmed from what the officials described as a brazen double shooting on Lander Street in the city of Newburgh around 8:30 a.m. on April 24. The shooting left one man dead and the other man paralyzed.

Police did not identify the victims at the time, nor were they identified in the news release. Officials also did not say what the motive for the shooting was.

The city police Detective Division led the resulting investigation. In addition to investigators from Hoovler's office, state police, the New York Police Department and the Hudson Valley Crime Analysis Center assisted in the investigation.

In a statement, Gomerez said the arrests of Hines and McRae sends a clear message: "If you commit crimes in the city of Newburgh, we will follow you anywhere necessary and use every resource at our disposal to bring justice to the victims and the weight of the law to the perpetrators."

Hines and McRae were arraigned in Newburgh City Court on Thursday and sent without bail to Orange County Jail, pending further court action.

McRae's attorney, Paul Weber, declined to make a comment on his client's behalf because he has not yet had a chance to review all the evidence.

Bruce Townsend, Hines' attorney, could not immediately be reached for comment.
