Two Brooklyn shootings leave one man dead and two others wounded: NYPD

A pair of shootings in Brooklyn on Monday afternoon left one man dead and two others wounded, police said.

In the first burst of gunplay, smoke shop owner Nelson Ortiz, 24, suffered two gunshot wounds to the torso at Avenue L and 95th St. in Canarsie.

Police responding to a 911 call found the victim badly wounded in the doorway of the New Midway Deli & Grill just after 4 p.m., cops said.

“I don’t know who would do this,” his brother Patrick Ortiz told the Daily News. “He doesn’t gang-bang. He doesn’t drink or smoke, even though he owns a smoke shop.”

The grieving sibling said that victim was hit while coming out of the deli after getting a sandwich.

“He was coming out of the deli when he was shot three times. He went to get a bacon, egg and cheese, his usual,” Patrick Ortiz said.

The brother rushed to the scene, only to see that it was too late for Nelson Ortiz.

“I knew he passed away when I got there,” he said. “I saw him on the ground. I watched his skin change. He was hit in the chest, left leg and lower back. His eyes were open. He was unconscious. He bled out before I got there.”

Nelson Ortiz was taken to Brookdale Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

“He didn’t have problems with anyone. My brother was the most giving person ever,” Patrick Ortiz said.

A local store manager, who recognized Nelson Oritz as a frequent customer, said he saw the victim on the ground in front of the bodega doorway.

“There were at least three shots and he was down, bleeding badly,” said Ronnie Kamis, 33. “I ran out and he was on the floor. The cops were pumping his chest, but he didn’t make it.”

He said that the shooting set off pandemonium on the block.

“Everyone was yelling his name — ‘Nelson, Nelson,’” Kamis said.

He added that he didn’t know the victim well, but would often see him come into his store.

“He was a regular customer and a nice guy,” he said.

Police are looking for two men in their 30s in connection with the fatal shooting. One suspect wore a yellow sweater, grey pants and yellow sneakers, police said. The other suspect is slim and wore a blue hoodie with a yellow strip, black pants and white and black sneakers.

About two hours after the Canarsie murder, just before 6 p.m. two men were shot, one in the abdomen and the other in the leg at Rutland Rd. and Rockaway Parkway in Brownsville.

They were taken to Kings County Hospital and are expected to recover.

There’s no indication that the episodes were connected.
