Two charged after dogs left in freezing weather for a week

LAFAYETTE COUNTY, Miss. — Two people in Mississippi are accused of animal cruelty after eight dogs were left outside their home in freezing weather, and two of them died.

Joey Wells and Ashley Wells were arrested after the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office conducted a welfare check on several dogs at their home on January 23.

Deputies said the dogs had been outside for approximately a week with inadequate shelter, food, and water. One of the dogs was dead when deputies arrived, and another dog died while the deputies were there.

The alleged owners were charged with one count each of aggravated cruelty to a dog or cat.

Both of them were apprehended on the warrants on January 26 and booked into the Lafayette County Detention Center. They are being held on a $20,000 bond.
