Two charged with murder after three-month investigation into Aurora shooting

A man from Aurora and a man from Montgomery have been charged with murder and attempted murder after an investigation into a shooting on Aurora’s East Side in September that left one person dead and another critically injured, officials said.

Aurora police responded on Sept. 24, 2022, to the 300 block of Center Avenue in response to a report of shots fired and found two people suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, police said in a news release Wednesday.

One of those shot, Ferrer Vicente Velasquez, 29, of the 300 block of Center Avenue, was pronounced dead at the scene. The other person shot was taken to a local hospital for treatment and was later released. The person is recovering from their injuries, Aurora police said.

After a three-month investigation, which included assistance from other law enforcement agencies, charges were brought in connection with the incident against Samuel Garcia, 24, of the 600 block of South Fourth Street in Aurora, and Alonzo Sanchez, 24, of the 100 block of Saugatuck Road in Montgomery, officials said.

Both are charged with three counts of first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder and four counts of aggravated battery with a firearm, police said.

Sanchez was taken into custody Jan. 6 and remains in the Kane County jail with bail set at $500,000.

Garcia was served with charges while inside the county jail, where he was detained on other charges, according to officials.

Detectives ask anyone with information about the incident to call the Aurora Police Department’s Investigations Division at 630-256-5500 or email tips@aurora.il.us.
