Two college students killed in crash in southwest Iowa on Friday night

Two teens were killed in a crash in Union County on Friday night.

According to the crash report, a vehicle with four passengers failed to stop at a stop sign on 190th Street at U.S. Highway 34 near Afton. Another vehicle, traveling eastbound on U.S. Highway 34, struck the car on the driver's side. Both cars went into a ditch.

Halsie Lynn Barnes, 19 of Tingley and Ella Jo Leonard, 19, of Winterset died of their injuries, according to the report. The two other women in the car were also injured and taken to hospitals in critical condition.

Both passengers in the other vehicle were listed as injured, but they were not taken to a hospital.

An Iowa State Patrol report says only two individuals in the crash were wearing seatbelts — Leonard and a passenger in the second vehicle.

Barnes and Leonard attended Southwestern Community College. A candlelight vigil is planned for Tuesday at 8:15 p.m. at the college's softball field in Creston.

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this article inaccurately described the seatbelt use of all passengers. This article has been updated with new information from the Iowa State Patrol. It has also been updated to more precisely describe the location of the crash.
