Two-day manhunt ends with arrest of suspected Maryland cop shooter David Linthicum

After more than 36 hours of searching, authorities descended on a wooded area near a Maryland mall, where they cornered and arrested David Linthicum, a suspect wanted for shooting two police officers.

Federal, state and local law enforcement agencies located the alleged gunman late Thursday and had Linthicum, 24, “pinned” within a “perimeter” in Fallston, according to the Hartford County Sheriff’s Office. He was taken into custody Friday around 5:43 a.m. after a car chase and an hours-long standoff with officers.

Authorities had been searching for him since Wednesday, when officers responded to a residence in Cockeysville to assist a person reported to be in crisis. As they approached, the man, identified as Linthicum, fired multiple shots, wounding one officer, police spokesperson Joy Stewart said.

Officers didn’t fire their weapons during that interaction and the wounded officer has since been released from the hospital, she said.

A second officer was shot on Thursday during the subsequent manhunt for Linthicum, Interim Baltimore County Police Chief Dennis Delp told reporters. Delp declined to say how many times the officer had been shot, but noted he was wearing a ballistics vest at the time.

Linthicum stole a detective’s vehicle after the shooting around 9:20 p.m., Delp said, and then fled from Cockeysville to Falston, where police used spike strips to disable the stolen vehicle. Linthicum then attempted to drive on the busted rims before he ran into the woods and became trapped in a nearby field.

A rifle and handgun were recovered from the stolen vehicle after Linthicum fled. Neither of the wounded officers has been identified.
