Two dead, child injured after Friday crash

Nov. 21—A Union Star, Missouri, woman and a Maysville, Missouri, man died in a two-vehicle accident in DeKalb County on Friday evening.

The crash occurred one mile north of Amity, Missouri, on Missouri Highway 6 just after 5:30 p.m., according to a Missouri State Highway Patrol crash report.

Tonya Maize, 52, was traveling north with a 10-year-old boy from Lathrop, Missouri, in a 2019 Jeep Cherokee, and Michael Burnett, 46, was traveling east in a 2014 Freightliner.

Maize failed to yield at an intersection, which caused Burnett to attempt to avoid her vehicle and then hit its driver's side, according to the crash report.

Both vehicles traveled off the roadway into an embankment. Burnett's vehicle overturned and struck a utility pole, then came to rest on its driver's side, the report said. Maize's vehicle landed on its wheels.

Maize and Burnett were pronounced dead at the scene. The 10-year-old received moderate injuries and was transported to Mosaic Life Care by DeKalb County EMS.

All parties were wearing their seat belts at the time of the accident, according to the crash report.
