Two dead, three injured after shots ring out at Hawaii cockfight

Two people died and three others were injured after a shooting took place at a cockfight in Hawaii, court documents released Thursday show.

Probable cause papers detailing one of the most serious shootings in state history were made public after an initial court appearance for one of the suspects, 23-year-old Jacob Borge.

Borge and a 16-year-old boy turned themselves in to police. Borge was charged with first- and second-degree murder, three counts of attempted murder and firearms charges. Bail was set at $2 million.

Petitions were also filed against the juvenile for the same charges, police said.

What is a cockfight?

During the contest, chickens inflict physical trauma on each other, sometimes increased by attaching metal spurs to their legs. The combatants, dubbed gamecocks, are specially bred and conditioned for increased stamina and strength, often injected with B12 and other vitamins similar to steroids.

A late night fight

Shortly after midnight Saturday, Honolulu police were dispatched to a rural neighborhood in Waianae following a report of shots fired shortly at the cockfight.

Waianae is located about 30 miles northwest of downtown Honolulu.

Arriving officers found attendees fleeing from the scene, according to the court documents.

One man shot told police that as the cockfight ended, three young males were involved in an argument that turned physical with six male affiliates of a “well-known organizer of chicken fights in the Waianae area,” court papers said.

State Public Defender James Tabe, whose office represented Borge at his initial court hearing, said it is too early to comment on the case.
