WOOLWICH — Two people died in a collision between a van and a truck that was merging onto the New Jersey Turnpike, police say.

The crash occurred when the van struck the rear of a tanker trailer that was entering the northbound highway from a ramp at Interchange 2 shortly before 4 p.m. Sunday, according to New Jersey State Police.

The van, which was in the highway’s right lane, veered off the road and overturned into a ravine, said a police account.

Killed were the van’s driver, Bryan Matos-Gonzalez, 29, of Raleigh, North Carolina, and a passenger, 24-year-old Jansel Lopez of Pottsville, Pennsylvania.

The Woolwich crash remains under investigation.
