Two dead, two injured after car crashes into tree in Hazel Crest early Saturday, police say

Two people are dead and two others are injured after a car crashed into a tree in south suburban Hazel Crest early Saturday, village police said.

The car, carrying four people, was traveling south on Wood Street around 2 a.m. when the car crashed into a tree near 169th Street, ejecting a passenger from one of the rear seats, police said. The driver of the car and the ejected passenger died.

The other two passengers were taken to the hospital and treated for injuries. Late Saturday, the Cook County medical examiner’s office had identified only one of the two victims, Christopher D. Hudspeth, 31, of Hazel Crest. Autopsies for both victims were scheduled for Sunday.

Police did not say whether the accident was related to weather.

At the time of the crash, a heavy snow system was falling across the Chicago area and northern Illinois with high winds. A measurement of 5.9 inches of fallen snow was recorded Saturday morning in the neighboring Village of Homewood.

Roughly an hour earlier, a 35-year-old woman died as a result of a single car crash on the Dan Ryan Expressway near 75th St on the city’s South Side.

Hazel Crest police are investigating and said no further details would be available until after a completed investigation.
