Two deer rescued from Coachella Canal in Indio Monday morning

Two young deer were rescued from the Coachella Canal on Monday morning as multiple agencies worked together to pull the wayward animals to safety.

A passerby reported two deer in the canal near Avenue 42 west of Golf Center Parkway around 7:49 a.m. Indio Police Department officers arrived to find the deer traveling westbound with the water current.

A coordinated response between the Indio police, Coachella Valley Water District, Indio Cal-Fire and the County of Riverside Animal Services followed and ended with the successful rescue of the deer, which were pulled to safety using ropes.

The deer were retrieved from the water west of Jackson Street north of Avenue 41. The deer appeared to be healthy and were then taken by County of Riverside Animal Services.
