Two die, two injured in Cherokee County crash

A single-vehicle crash killed two young people Thursday afternoon in Cherokee County, according to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency's Highway Patrol Division.

Brittney D. Hayes, 21, of Piedmont, and an 18-year-old from Vidalia, Georgia, whose identity wasn't released, were fatally injured when the 2003 Ford Explorer they were passengers in left the roadway, struck a mound of dirt and overturned.

Hayes and the teenager were ejected, troopers said; neither was using a seat belt. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the vehicle, Cameron S. Drummond, 20, of Chatsworth, Georgia, and another passenger, Blake A. Broome, 22, of Piedmont, were injured and transported to Regional Medical Center for treatment.

The crash occurred at about 4:30 p.m. Thursday on Cherokee County Road 175 near Cherokee County Road 176, about 5 miles north of Piedmont.

Troopers continue to investigate.
