Two of El Paso's top distance runners are staying close to home to run for New Mexico State University in Las Cruces.

Franklin's Jordan Torres and San Elizario's Samantha Ramirez have committed to run for the Aggies beginning with the fall semester.

Torres helped lead the Cougars to the state cross country meet twice as a team and to four straight District 1-6A championships.

"NMSU built a strong relationship with me and I really liked that," Torres said. "I feel like I really grew as a student-athlete here at Franklin and we accomplished so much. I had great teammates here and great coaches. I wouldn't have gotten where I am today without them."

Ramirez qualified for the Class 4A state cross country meet in November and competed in the 1,600 and 3,200 meters in the track and field season.

"New Mexico State was the right fit for me both academically and athletically," Ramirez said. "I felt really comfortable with the program and I'm excited to see what the next four years brings. Making state in cross country showed that hard work and discipline pays off and I think it helped me get a chance to compete at the Division I level."
