Two events collide at Waterfront Park: Your weekend guide to FunkFest and Pride Festival

Fans of live music have plenty of options to choose from this weekend. Two major concerts are planned for Waterfront Park in downtown Louisville including the two-day Funk Fest and the Kentuckiana Pride Festival on Saturday. And because it's a short walk between the two areas of the park where these music events will be held, why not enjoy both?

Here's what to know about this weekend's music concerts at Waterfront Park:

What to know about the 2023 Louisville Funk Fest

The two-day festival, which is part of the multi-city Funk Fest tour, takes place Friday and Saturday at the Waterfront Park Great Lawn, 231 Witherspoon St.

The Funk Fest Facebook page calls this event the "ultimate Old School R&B/Hip Hop outdoor music experience."

Friday's lineup includes rap legend JeezyJuvenile, known for club classics like "Back That Thang Up," Slick Rick, and Doug E. Fresh, who recently performed at the Barnstable Brown Derby Eve Gala in May. These musicians share the Friday night stage with artists 8Ball & MJG and Big Daddy Kane in what is billed as a "celebration of 50 years of hip hop."

It's all about R&B on Saturday night when headliners including Fantasia, who became the third "American Idol" winner in 2004, Ginuwine and Jagged Edge. Other artists on Saturday's lineup include CameoCase, and Sunshine Anderson.

Tickets for the 2023 Funk Fest start at $40 for a single-day pass or $60 for a two-day pass. Gates open Friday at 4 p.m. with music starting at 5:30 p.m. On Saturday, gates open at 3 p.m. and the show starts at 5 p.m.

What to know about the Kentuckiana Pride Festival

The Kentuckiana Pride Festival is taking place Saturday, June 17 on the Big Four Lawn, 1101 E. River Road in Waterfront Park. This is the section of the park located near the Big Four Pedestrian Bridge.

The full day of music runs from noon-10 p.m. with VincintBrooke Eden, and Slayyter set to headline the 2023 festival.

The annual LGBTQIA+ Pride celebration at Waterfront Park will also feature pop singer-songwriter Morgxn and country artist Chris Housman as well as multiple local artists including The Daddy Sisters, Adam Thomas, Most Wanted, and the VOICES of Kentuckiana chorus.

The 2023 Pride Festival kicks off with the annual Kentuckiana Pride Parade at noon on Campbell and Market streets and ends at the Big Four Lawn. Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg will serve as Grand Marshal for the parade.

It is free to attend the parade. General admission into the festival is $10 and VIP tickets are $125. Tickets for the Kentuckiana Pride Festival are on sale at kypride.com.
