Decision on new Reynoldsburg superintendent expected Dec. 20

The Reynoldsburg Board of Education is to name its new superintendent Dec. 20, according to Stephanie Beougher, director of communications for Reynoldsburg City Schools.

Board members met in an executive session Dec. 14 with staff and several stakeholder groups to interview two finalists for the post, Beougher said.

The board was scheduled to meet Dec. 15 to select a superintendent but the meeting was cancelled hours before in was to held and rescheduled at 7 p.m. Dec. 20 "due to a scheduling conflict," Beougher said.

The district identified the two finalists Dec. 9.

They are Tracy Reed, chief academic officer, Sandusky City Schools, and Claude Tiller, Jr., assistant superintendent of high school transformation, Detroit Public School Community District.

An interview of the two finalists had been set for Dec. 12 during an executive session of the school board but was canceled for "unforeseen circumstances," Beougher said previously.

The executive session, closed to the public, was held Dec. 14 at the Summit Campus of Reynoldsburg High School "to consider employment and compensation of a public official."

The two finalists were selected after board members interviewed five candidates during executive sessions Dec. 7-8.

The district announced Dec. 9 the board was to meet Dec. 12 but then rescheduled the meeting that same day to Dec. 14.

In addition to Reed and Tiller, the other candidates interviewed were:

  • David Harmon, chief of human resources, Dayton Public Schools

  • M. Denise Lutz, chief technology officer, Upper Arlington City Schools

  • Naim Sanders, assistant superintendent, Reynoldsburg City Schools

Board President Debbie Dunlap said the process "was no easy task."

“The most important job of any board of education is hiring the superintendent, the next leader of our educational community. It’s a task we take very seriously, reviewing an immense amount of information in the process. The Educational Service Center of Central Ohio has presented us with 18 quality candidates, so deciding on two we would like to interview in our second round was no easy task,” Dunlap said Dec. 9.

“We are looking forward to being able to dig a bit deeper with our interview process scheduled for (Dec. 12), while inviting stakeholder representatives to participate in that process as well. Their feedback is very important to us as we make this major decision.”

The superintendent is to begin Jan. 2, 2023, according to Beougher.

The superintended is to succeed interim Reynoldsburg Superintendent Jocelyn Cosgrave, whom board members appointed Oct. 10 and is the fourth person to act as the district’s superintendent in 2022.

Cosgrave succeeded Dan Good.

Good, who resigned Oct. 7, had served as interim superintendent since July 20 and his contract was to run through Dec. 31.

Good was named interim superintendent after Garilee Ogden, who accepted a three-year contract to succeed Melvin Brown, resigned before the start of the contract term.

Board members May 26 announced the hiring of Ogden following a search conducted with the assistance of Finding Leaders.

But Reynoldsburg is using the ESCCO for the current search.

Ogden was to succeed Melvin Brown, who resigned earlier this year to become superintendent of Montgomery Public Schools in Alabama.
