Several animals were killed in a stable fire in the village of Nashotah early Tuesday morning.

Lake Country Fire & Rescue responded to a call of a fire around 3:14 a.m. Assistant Chief Matthew Haerter said that a neighbor called in the fire after seeing a glow from the fire a few miles away.

Initially, because of confusion about the location of the call, the Western Lakes Fire District first responded to the scene and discovered the fully involved fire with flames coming from all over a stable in the 300 block of Nashotah Road.

Lake Country Fire & Rescue arrived soon after, as well as the Merton and Hartland fire departments.

The fire was brought under control within 20 minutes and departments remained on scene for a total of about two hours. Haerter said the building collapsed and is considered a total loss.

No people were injured, but Haerter said that two horses and three dogs were lost in the fire.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
