Two hours, two deadly crashes: One near St. Thomas, one near Shippensburg

There were two deadly crashes involving tractor-trailers Monday evening in Franklin County.

A 51-year-old Chambersburg man died of injuries suffered in the first crash in St. Thomas Township, according to Pennsylvania State Police.

Johnny O. Epps had to be cut from his pickup truck and died while being transported to a hospital after the 5:24 p.m. crash on U.S. 30, also known as Lincoln Way West, near Mercersburg Road, police said.

Police had not issued a news release about the second crash that occurred about two hours later in Southampton Township by 10 a.m. Tuesday.

News and social media sites report it happened at 8900 Olde Scotland Road in Southampton Township outside of Shippensburg. According to The New Franklin County News Facebook page, a car was on fire and one person was found dead inside at 7:48 p.m.

What happened in the collision near St. Thomas?

Police said Epps was westbound in a 2002 Ford F150 when he attempted to turn left into a store. His pickup collided head-on with an eastbound 2016 Volvo driven by Troy L. Wolf, 59, of Gardners, Pa.

After the impact, the tractor-trailer ran off the road, hit a utility pole and a parked Ford Econoline E350. Debris from the tractor-trailer hit and damaged several gas pumps at St. Thomas Diesel.

Debris from Epps’ pickup hit a westbound 2022 Chevrolet Colorado driven by Denver R. Walls, 24, of St. Thomas.

Wolf was treated at the scene by EMS, but Walls and his passenger were not hurt.

News and social media sites report the second crash happened about two hours later at 8900 Olde Scotland Road in Southampton Township, one person died at the scene and another was taken to the hospital.

A message left for Pennsylvania State Police was not immediately returned.
