Two Hubs, two Rebels earn 3A West indoor track and field titles

North Hagerstown’s Mio Desclous was voted The Herald-Mail’s Washington County Boys Athlete of the Week for April 24-29.

BALTIMORE North Hagerstown's Mio Desclous and Lauren Stine, and South Hagerstown's Jacob Stoner and Ethan VanMeter earned individual region titles Thursday in the Maryland Class 3A West indoor track and field championships at the Baltimore Armory.

Desclous prevailed in the boys pole vault, clearing a personal-best 12 feet, 4 inches, and Stine won the girls 3,200-meter run in a season-best 11:36.52 for the Hubs.

Stoner won the boys 300 in 38.08 seconds and VanMeter won the boys shot put with a throw of 47 feet, 6 inches for the Rebels.

For North, also qualifying for the state championships were D.U. Mbeli (second in the boys shot put in a personal-best 42-9), the girls 4x800 relay team of Raya Mustafa, Sophia Williams, Ella Hajel and Rian Johnson (second, 10:51.00), and Jake Scallion in the boys 500 (third, 1:11.26).

For South, also qualifying for the state championships were Ana Small-Simmons in the girls high jump (fifth in a personal-best 4-7), Riley Troxell in the girls pole vault (sixth in a personal-best 10-2) and Tyler Sokol in the boys pole vault (eighth in a personal-best 9-10).

Athletes and relay teams qualified for the state meet by finishing in the top four in their events, or by meeting the state advancement standards.

The 3A state meet will be held at the Prince George's Sports & Learning Complex on Feb. 22.
