Two injured after truck collides with Amish buggy on State Road 60 East

MITCHELL — Two were left injured Monday morning after a truck rear-ended an Amish buggy on State Road 60 East in Mitchell near Spring Mill State Park.

According to a crash report obtained from the Lawrence County Sheriff's Department, 74-year-old Ronald Higdon, of Orleans, was traveling west on State Road 60 at 6:45 a.m., when his 2004 Chevrolet Silverado collided with the back of an Amish horse-drawn buggy that was also in the roadway.

Higdon approached the buggy too quickly, did not see it in time due to the darkness at the time and was unable to stop his vehicle, the report said.

Henry Troyer, 19, Mitchell, and Susan Hershburger, 21, occupied the buggy at the time of the wreck. Both sustained head injuries. Troyer refused medical treatment, while Hershburger was transported from the scene to receive immediate medical attention.

Higdon did not sustain any severe injuries in the crash.

Both Higdon's truck and the buggy had to be removed from the scene due to damages sustained. Higdon's truck was towed away from the scene by Mikels' Service while the buggy, which was totaled in the accident, was hauled away by a pickup truck.
