According to an update from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department on Wednesday, the two victims were in a Mazda 3 that was going east on W. Trade Street. The driver lost control of the car and it rolled over onto its side before hitting a utility pole. Police say the utility pole tore the roof off of the car, and then the car flipped upright after a tire dug into the ground.

CMPD says the driver, Heliberta Ramirez Villanueva, and the passenger, Diana Segura Telles, were both ejected from the car during the crash. They weren’t wearing seat belts, CMPD said.

Police said toxicology results are pending, but investigators believe speed and impairment are factors in the crash.
