Two Lafayette Police officers shot, one child dead, and two other victims injured in shooting

Two Lafayette Police officers were shot and three other victims were injured Saturday morning after the Lafayette Police Department responded to a call in the 100 block of S. General Marshall St., according to police.

According to a Lafayette Police Department press release, at 02:14 a.m., the LPD responded to a call in the 100 block of S. General Marshall St. Lafayette, LA 70501, in reference to a fight in progress.

Upon arrival responding Officers located a residence in the area of which the dispatched call had originated. As Officers made contact with the believed parties involved in the altercation, Officers were engaged in gunfire by the suspect. The suspect was able to fire gunshots at two uniformed LPD Officers. It was later determined that three additional victims were struck by gunfire during the shooting incident.

The suspect was later taken into custody and is currently receiving medical treatment at a local hospital for their injuries. One LPD Officer was shot multiple times by the suspect and is currently in stable condition. Another LPD Officer was shot multiple times by the suspect and is currently in critical condition. Both Officers were transported to a local hospital where they were receiving medical treatment.

The latest update by the Lafayette Police Department stated, both officers shot during the incident are continuing to recover.  One officer remains hospitalized at this time and the other officer has been released and is recovering at home.

The Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office confirmed the other victims included an adult female and two children. One of the children later died at the hospital. The other two victims remain in critical condition at the hospital and are continuing to receive medical treatment.

LPD Investigators are actively working the incident that led up to the Officer involved incident. Any updates will be provided via an additional press release.
