The Highland event was attended by the store’s associates and a number of local nonprofit groups who were recipients of $4,000 in grants, according to one release.

Store manager Adam Walker presented grant checks to the following:

  • Highland Public Safety - $2,000

The Glen Carbon Supercenter’s updates were similar to those in Highland and also included:

  • Re-striped parking lot and refreshed landscaping;

  • Fully remodeled restrooms;

  • A refreshed exterior and interior;

  • A new dollar section and “Grab & Go” lunch and deli items at the front of the store.

“We’re extremely proud of the improvements made to help fulfill the needs of our community members,” Store Manager Skip Sponeman stated in a release. “I grew up here, so I’m glad Walmart continues to invest in Glen Carbon.”

At the Glen Carbon ribbon-cutting event, Sponeman presented grant checks to the following local nonprofits:

  • Edwardsville CEO - $3,000

  • Main Street Community Center - $3,000

  • Glen Carbon Police Association - $2,000

  • Edwardsville Arts Center - $1,000

The Glen Carbon ribbon-cutting event included the unveiling of a “community inspired” mural by local artist Steve Hartman, according to the release.

The event featured food and refreshments for guests, a DJ, balloon animal artist and special appearances from the Cocoa Puffs mascot and a live cow and calf from Prairie Farms.

Stores of the future plan

The improvements at both stores are part of Walmart’s “Store of the Future” design plan, which “seeks to inspire customers and elevate their in-store experiences,” according to both releases.

Upgrades include:

  • Activated corner displays featured at the corners of certain departments are designed to attract customers and help them “touch, feel and become a part of the space, allowing them to discover all that Walmart has to offer,” stated the release.

  • Displays showcase products out of their boxes so customers can imagine them fitting into their daily lives.

  • More space is available for customers to explore and discover the breadth and depth of what their local store has to offer.

  • New digital touchpoints located throughout the store help communicate to customers the vast range of products and services Walmart offers online through the use of QR codes and digital screens. For example, in Walmart’s Pets area, a customer may scan the QR code to find additional dog bed options, learn about Walmart’s pet insurance service options or have a 20-pound bag of kibble delivered to their door.
