Two Marathon County teens killed and two critically injured in Saturday crash

FARMINGTON − An 18-year-old Weston woman and 16-year-old Schofield boy were killed Saturday when a semi hauling cattle hit the SUV they were in.

At 12:21 p.m. Saturday, an 18-year-old Wausau woman was driving an SUV east on Washington County H in the town of Farmington and stopped for a stop sign at the State 144 intersection, according to the Washington County Sheriff's Office. A semi hauling cattle was going north on State 144 when the SUV pulled out in front of it.

The semi's driver attempted to avoid the SUV but hit it in the passenger side, according to the Sheriff's Office. The SUV went down an embankment and into a ditch line. The semi went off the road and overturned in the ditch.

When deputies arrived, they learned the four teenagers in the SUV were critically injured and two did not have a pulse and were not breathing, according to the Sheriff's Office. Deputies, a first responder and a citizen performed CPR on the two most critical patients.

The emergency efforts were continued by first responders and rescue personnel, but the 18-year-old Weston woman and 16-year-old Schofield boy died at the scene, according to the Sheriff's Office.

Citizens who stopped helped the 18-year-old Wausau woman out of the vehicle. An ambulance took her to Froedtert Hospital in West Bend. A 17-year-old Wausau girl who was a passenger in the front seat was taken by helicopter to Children's Hospital in Milwaukee, according to the Sheriff's Office.

The driver of the semi, a 19-year-old Farmington man and his passenger, a 17-year-old Farmington boy, were not injured in the crash.

Several cattle were ejected when the semi overturned in the ditch. Citizens who stopped to help quickly corralled the cattle. Two cattle died in the crash, and a veterinarian had to euthanize one because of its severe injuries.
