Two men arrested after car leads authorities on a chase through three Kansas counties

A car led several law enforcement agencies on a chase through three Kansas counties on Sunday.

The chase started around 5:45 p.m. along U.S. 54 in Kiowa County just east of Greensburg. A Kansas Highway Patrol trooper tried to stop a silver Infiniti for reckless driving, Kansas Highway Patrol trooper Chad Crittenden said.

“The suspect vehicle was passing vehicles on the shoulder and going left of the center on 54 highway,” Crittenden added. “He pursued it for 16 minutes and disregarded the pursuit because the vehicle was continuing to drive head on into traffic.”

At some points during the pursuit, the Infiniti reached speeds of over 100 mph, according to Crittenden.

Minutes after the trooper left the pursuit, the Infiniti was spotted on a county road by a Kiowa County Sheriff’s Office deputy who initiated a chase.

That chase led deputies into Pratt County, where the Pratt County Sheriff’s Office took over the pursuit, Crittenden said.

At some point in Pratt County, a firearm was thrown out of the Infiniti. The gun was recovered by a KHP trooper, Crittenden added.

The Infiniti made its way into Kingman County, where Pratt County deputies left the chase as KHP rejoined it.

“Once the chase hit the Kingman County line one of our troopers took it back over and pursued the car for about four miles,” Crittenden said. “They turned off of U.S. 54 into a county road in Kingman County.”

KHP again called off the pursuit because of how fast the Infiniti was going on a gravel road. “At one point the suspect vehicle had struck a Kingman County Sheriff’s Office patrol vehicle,” Crittenden added.

That patrol vehicle was disabled as the Infiniti continued fleeing. Shortly after that, around 6:33 p.m., authorities found the Infiniti abandoned and in flames around in northwest Kingman County.

Authorities set up a perimeter around the area. The first suspect was found around 7:55 p.m. and the second at 8:10 p.m., Crittenden said.

The men were found in a field and taken into custody, Crittenden added.
