Two men arrested in connection with downtown Canal Walk shooting, Indianapolis police say

Two men have been arrested in connection with the May 11 shooting on downtown Indianapolis’ Canal Walk that left four people wounded, police said.

Indianapolis police on Friday announced the arrests of Dayvon Jackson and Radrice Johnson in the shooting that officials said erupted over a “prior beef” between two groups and led to the gunfire on opposite sides of the canal. A 17-year-old girl and three other women, ranging in age from 18 to 24, were shot.

Jackson and Johnson face four counts each of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, four counts each of battery on a person with injury, criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon and possession of a handgun without a license.

The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said detectives identified Jackson, 19, as a suspect through surveillance video and witnesses. Officials said downtown officers saw Jackson on Thursday at the Julie M. Carson-IndyGo Transit Center with another man matching the description of the second suspect believed to be involved in the shooting. Officers detained the two men.

Police said through further investigation, investigators then identified and arrested Johnson, 20, as the other suspected shooter in the case.

Detectives also arrested an 18-year-old and a 15-year-old who police say were involved in the shooting and had outstanding felony warrants. Court records show the 18-year-old was wanted for charges of armed robbery, pointing a firearm at another person and carrying a handgun without a license. Details about the 15-year-old's warrant were not immediately available.

Detectives expect more arrests to be made in the case.

On the day of the shooting, Indianapolis officers patrolling the canal area about 12:30 a.m. while working overtime heard the gunshots and found the scene in minutes. The 17-year-old girl and three other women who were shot were taken to a hospital in stable condition.

Shortly after the shooting, officers found another wounded person near the canal who had a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Police said the person was part of the group of four people wounded and he had shot himself in the foot.

Police Chief Randal Taylor in a prepared statement said the arrests would not have been possible “without the dedication of our detectives, downtown district officers and so many others.” He also thanked the canal's residents, “who cooperated with our detectives and stood up to say enough is enough.”

“It’s a reminder to all that we will not stand for this kind of violence in Indianapolis, not today or in the future,” Taylor said.
