Troopers from the Ohio State Highway Patrol Marion Post are investigating a serious injury crash on State Route 309 that left a Galion man and his Marion passenger in critical condition after colliding with a semi-truck Thursday.

Driving a 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier, the Galion man, J R Crabtree, 38, was driving eastbound on State Route 309 when he veered left of center and was struck by a 2019 International LT62F semi traveling westbound.

The Cavalier came to a stop in the eastbound lane after the crash, whereas the semi truck traveled off the south side of the road, striking a guardrail, a ditch and a tree.

Crabtree and his passenger, Hayden Kinney, 30, of Marion, were ejected from the Cavalier as a result of the crash, sustaining serious injuries. Neither was wearing a seatbelt.

Crabtree was transported to Marion General Hospital by 1st Consolidated EMS and was later transported to Riverside Hospital in Columbus by MedFlight Ground.

Kinney was also transported from the scene to Marion General by Marion Twp. EMS. He was later transported to Grant Medical Center in Columbus by MedFlight Ground.

As of Friday morning, both men were still hospitalized in Columbus and in critical condition, according to Ohio State Highway Patrol Marion Post Commander Lieutenant Lance S. Shearer.

Semi driver, Omar Mumim, 48, of Burlington, Vermont, and his passenger, Mohamed Kassim, 39, of Burlington, Vermont, were both transported to Marion General Hospital by Marion Twp. EMS with non-life threatening injuries.

Debris from the crash also caused minor damage to the vehicle driving eastbound behind Crabtree, a 2008 Honda CR-V driven by Paxton Schwaderer, 27, of Marion. She was not physically injured as a result of the crash.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol was assisted at the scene by the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, Marion Township Fire and EMS, 1st Consolidated Fire and EMS, the Ohio Department of Transportation and Ed’s 24 Hour Service.

This crash remains under investigation.
