Two men escaped a sinking car after a crash into a canal, but only one survived, Idaho State Police reported.

The 21-year-old driver of a 2011 Hyundai Elantra lost control near Jerome and crashed into a canal at 3:09 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 10, state police said in a news release.

The driver and a 27-year-old passenger, both of Ketchum, escaped the sinking car, but the driver drowned, police said.

A sheriff’s dive team recovered his body Wednesday, Sept. 13, officials said.

The crash remains under investigation, police said.
