Two men have died from their injuries sustained in a house fire Friday morning on Columbus' Hilltop.

Columbus Fire Battalion Chief Steve Martin said fire crews were called to 316 Lechner Ave. around 7:40 a.m. by a neighbor who spotted the fire.

Firefighters were quickly able to get water on the blaze, Martin said, and immediately found one of the men inside the single-story, wood-frame home. The second man was found a short time later and had to be brought out of the house through a window.

Both men were taken to Ohio State University's Wexner Medical Center in critical, life-threatening condition, Martin said.

One of the men died at 8:25 a.m. at the hospital. The second man died at 8:39 a.m., Martin said. The identities of the two men were not available as of mid-afternoon Friday pending notification of family and positive confirmation of identity by the Franklin County Coroner's office.

The fire was contained within about 30 minutes, Martin said.

Investigators are continuing to investigate the cause of the fire and trying to determine if there were working smoke detectors in the home, which was built in 1953 and is a rental property.

No other homes were damaged by the blaze.
