An Akron man and a New York man were sentenced Friday to life in prison in the shooting death of an Akron man last July.

Anthony Fowler, 44, the Akron man, and Alexander Quarterman, 49, were found guilty May 17 by a Summit County Common Pleas Court of murder and felonious assault charges.

The two men got into a fight with Derrick Patterson outside Copley Minimart in West Akron, but a relative of the slain man was able to break up the fight. He dropped Patterson off about a block away.

Minutes later, however, Fowler and Quarterman drove by and ran Patterson over, then shot and killed him, the jury found.

The victim was found two blocks west of the convenience store in a parking lot between Noah and Storer avenues. He was taken to Cleveland Clinic Akron General, where he was pronounced dead.

The Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office determined that the cause of Patterson’s death was gunshot wounds to the neck and torso.

Fowler was arrested in August, while Quarterman was taken into custody in New York state in September and extradited back to Akron.

Fowler will be eligible for parole in 18 years and Quarterman in 25 years.
