Two Men Stabbed Outside D.C. Gay Bar

Two men were stabbed after stepping out of a Washington, D.C., gay bar in the trendy Dupont Circle neighborhood of the nation’s capital last week, leaving one of the men bleeding from the neck.

Metropolitan Police officials arrested Mary Kennedy, 35, for allegedly assaulting the men with scissors last Friday evening, according to a news release.

The men had stepped out of Fireplace, one of several gay bars in the District, to smoke a cigarette. A woman alleged to be Kennedy approached them and stabbed the men in the neck, court documents reveal, the Washington Blade reports.

According to arrest documents, one victim, who was bleeding heavily, had to be taken to the hospital for treatment. The second stabbed person did not require medical treatment.

A D.C. Superior Court judge ordered Kennedy held in custody and required her to undergo a mental health examination to determine whether she was fit to understand the charges against her.

She’s expected back in court on August 28, when the judge will consider the next steps regarding her pre-trial detention and other aspects pertinent to her case.

According to the arrest affidavit, a uniformed Secret Service agent apprehended Kennedy minutes after she fled the scene following the stabbing of the man waiting at the bus stop, the Blade reports.

Witnesses stated that Kennedy did not speak to either victim before the stabbings. The stabbings were “unprovoked,” according to the affidavit.

When D.C. police arrested Kennedy, scissors found in Kennedy’s purse with blood on it were identified as the weapon used in the stabbings.

Neither of the two stabbings appears to be a hate crime, according to a police report.

“They just walked out to get some air,” said the day manager of Fireplace. “It had nothing to do with the bar. They were at the wrong place at the wrong time. It was just some crazy lady.”
