Two mosquito pool samples from Easton tests positive for West Nile Virus
Two recent mosquito pool samples from Easton tested positive for West Nile Virus, the Massachusetts Department of Health and town officials said Wednesday.
Town officials say the pools were both collected on August 8. At least one came from a group of Coquillettidia Pertubans, mosquitos that typically bite humans and birds.
95 WNV-positive samples were found in the Bay State last year, including one in Easton.

WNV is usually transmitted to humans by a bite from a mosquito carrying the virus. Most people infected with the virus will only experience mild side effects, if they experience any at all. People over 50 are at a higher risk for more serious illnesses.
Although Easton continues to be designated as low-risk, Easton town officials advised residents to be aware of the risks and provided the following safety tips for residents:
Apply insect repellent when you go outdoors.
Wear long sleeves, long pants and socks when outdoors
Be aware of peak mosquito hours - The hours from dusk to dawn are peak feasting times for many mosquitoes.
Drain standing water - Limit the number of places around your home for mosquitoes to breed by either draining or getting rid of items that hold water.
Install or repair screens - Keep the pests outside by having fitted screens on all your windows and doors.
