Two Pensacola restaurants temporarily close after failed inspections. How did your favorite fare?

Two Pensacola restaurants were forced to temporarily close their doors in the month of November following an inspection by the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation.

In addition to those two, nine other eateries across Escambia and Santa Rosa counties received administrative complaints and five others received over a dozen violations.

Overall, 128 restaurants passed the first inspection, compared to the 24 that didn’t.

It was good news for some, as 59 restaurants spanning the two counties passed with zero violations. A full list of those restaurants can be found at the end of this article.

Two facilities forced to close

Seafoods Station, LLC. 4795 N. Ninth Ave.

Seafoods Stations was a top offender for the month, receiving 13 violations after a Nov. 9 visit from the DBPR, forcing the restaurant to shut down temporarily. Three of the violations were considered to be high priority, including roach activity.

The inspector observed about 20 live roaches in the restaurant, mainly around the dish machine area. Some of the other offenses included foods being stored at improper temperatures, roach sticky traps on the sushi bar and shelves in the back kitchen soiled with food debris, mold-like substance or slime.

The DBPR made a follow-up visit the next day where Seafoods Station met inspection standards, but still received three violations. Those included a bowl with no handle being used to dispense food, a current hotel and restaurant license not being displayed and not having a probe thermometer to measure the temperature of food products.

Rigos Tacos 2, 1717 North T St.

Rigos Tacos 2 was temporarily shut down following a Nov. 5 visit from the DBPR where it received two violations. The highest priority offense being the discovery of 24 live roaches in the restaurant. There were 12 roaches observed underneath a wooden table next to the entrance of the kitchen, five live roaches on top of a mini reach-in cooler next to the kitchen and seven found on the floor along the back wall of the kitchen.

The other violation was for not having proof of required state approved employee training.

After a follow-up visit was made by the DPPR on Nov. 12, there were still two live roaches found in the kitchen, and the facility remained close. There was also still no proof of employee training.

In a third visit on Nov. 15, the restaurant met inspection standards, but still received one violation for not having proof of employee training.

Nine restaurants receive administrative complaints

Mr. Chen, 6705 Pine Forest Road

Mr. Chen received an administrative complaint following a Nov. 17 visit from the DBPR where they scored four violations. The primary reason for receiving the complaint was for operating with an expired Division of Hotels and Restaurants license. Other offenses included using cardboard to line food-contact shelves, raw food not being properly stored, and a food-contact surface soiled with food debris, mold-like substance or slime.

Mr. Chen complied with a follow-up inspection on Nov. 22 and did not receive any violations.

Deluna’s Chat & Chew, 920 Palafox St.

Following a Nov. 9 visit from the DBPR, Deluna’s received an administrative complaint for one violation, which was operating with an expired Division of Hotels and Restaurants license. A follow-up inspection is still required.

Mr. Shawarma, 6215 N. Ninth Ave.

Following a Nov. 8 visit from the DBRR, Mr. Shawarma received three violations with an administrative complaint for operating with an expired Division of Hotels and Restaurants license. Other offences included food being stored on the floor and no paper towels or hand drying device provided at the hand washing sink. A follow-up inspection is still required.

Shannon’s Seafood Restaurant LLC, 7000 Pine Forest Road

Following a Nov. 4 visit from the DBPR, Shannon’s Seafood Restaurant received an administrative complaint for one violation, which was operating with an expired Division of Hotels and Restaurants license. The restaurant complied with a follow-up inspection on Nov. 22.

Pizza Hut #2243, 8708 Beulah Road

Following a Nov. 3 visit from the DBPR, Pizza Hut received an administrative complaint for one violation, which was operating with an expired Division of Hotels and Restaurants license. The restaurant complied with a follow-up inspection on Nov. 14.

Cici’s Pizza #207, 7145 C N. Ninth Ave.

Following a Nov. 3 visit from the DBPR, Cici’s Pizza received an administrative complaint for one violation, which was operating with an expired Division of Hotels and Restaurants license. A follow-up inspection is still required.

Ensley Lounge Grill, 8540 Elbert St.

Following a Nov. 2 visit from the DBPR, Ensley Lounge Grill received an administrative complaint for one violation, which was operating with an expired Division of Hotels and Restaurants license. The restaurant complied with a follow-up inspection later that same day.

Cafeteria La Hondurena, mobile

Following a Nov. 2 visit from the DBPR, Cafeteria La Hondurena received an administrative complaint for one violation, which was operating with an expired Division of Hotels and Restaurants license. A follow-up inspection is still required.

Nikko of Pace, 4510 Hwy. 90

Following a Nov. 3 inspection from the DBPR, Nikko of Pace received seven violations, with an administrative complaint for operating with an expired Division of Hotels and Restaurants license. Other violations included the accumulation a black/green mold-like substance in the interior of the ice machine, a bowl being used to dispense food, a cove molding missing at the wall juncture, ice buildup in the reach-in freezer, food not being stored at the proper temperature and food being thawed improperly. A follow-up inspection is still required.

Five restaurants exceed 10 violations

El Paso Mexican Grill 3, 5041 Dogwood Dr., Milton

Following a Nov. 3 inspection from the DBPR, El Pass received 15 different violations. Some of the top violations included a dead roach found on top of the dish machine, food being stored on the floor and the interior of the microwave soiled with debris. A follow-up inspection was not required.

Grape Garden, North Navy Blvd. #7

Following a Nov. 17 visit from the DBPR, the Grape Garden received 13 different violations. Some of the top violations included raw food being improperly stored, temperature abuse of certain abuse and non-food grade bags being used in direct contact with food. The restaurant complied with a follow-up inspection the following day with zero violations.

Sake Café, 4880 N. Ninth Ave.

Folowing a Nov. 2 visit from the DBPR, Sake Café received 12 different violations. Some of the top violations included single-use gloves not being changed when needed, accumulation of a black/green mold-like substance in the interior of the ice machine and an employee with no hair restraint engaging in food preparation. A follow-up inspection was not required.

Clean Eatz, 800 Navy Blvd.

Following a Nov. 15 visit from the DBPR, Clean Eatz received 11 different violations. Some of the top violations included food being stored on the floor, stored food not being covered and employee personal items being stored in or above a food preparation area. A follow-up inspection was not required.

Wasabi House, 4797 U.S. 90, Pace

Following a Nov. 15 visit from the DBPR, Wasabi House received 11 different violations. Some of the top violations included no certified food service manager on duty, bowl being used to dispense food and the accumulation black/green mold-like substance in the interior of the ice machine. A follow-up inspection is still required.
