Crash claims lives of El Paso couple: Woman thrown onto highway, struck by motorcycle

An El Paso couple died after the man lost control of their motorcycle and crashed into a concrete barrier, which resulted in the woman being thrown onto the highway where she was struck by another motorcycle, authorities said.

A 25-year-old man was driving a 2008 Yamaha R6 motorcycle with a 23-year-old woman as a passenger about 8:45 p.m. Thursday as part of a group of motorcyclists driving on the César Chávez Border Highway near Campbell Street, El Paso Police Department officials said.

The 25-year-old man lost control of the motorcycle at a curve in the highway, officials said. The motorcycle then struck a concrete barrier and a light pole.

The victims, whose names have not been released, were thrown from the motorcycle.

The woman landed in the middle of the highway's right lanes and was struck by another motorcycle, officials said.

The second motorcycle, a 2022 Yamaha R7, was driven by a 23-year-old man, whose name also has not been released. The collision with the woman caused the 23-year-old man to crash, officials said.

The victims died on the highway before they could taken to the hospital, officials said. The 23-year-old man was taken to a hospital to be treated for injuries.

Speed is believed to be a factor in the crash, officials said. Police believe the driver of the first motorcycle was not wearing a helmet.

These are the 27th and 28th traffic-related deaths of 2023 compared to 29 at this same time last year.
