A man involved in a drunken-driving incident and a pedestrian died in unrelated crashes Saturday in East El Paso, officials said.

The first wreck, which involved three vehicles, happened about 4:15 a.m. Saturday on Loop 375 near the Pellicano Drive exit, El Paso Police Department officials said.

A 2015 Silver Honda Accord driven by a 32-year-old woman was struck from behind by a 2002 White Chevrolet Astro Van driven by 37-year-old Joseph Isaac Ayala, officials said.

The collision caused the van to spin and end up facing the wrong way on the highway.

A 2019 Silver Nissan Titan driven by a 32-year-old man was unable to avoid colliding head on with the van, officials said.

The drivers in all three vehicles were taken to a hospital.

Ayala died at the hospital due to the injuries suffered in the crash, officials said.

Police believe speed and alcohol are the main contributing factors in the wreck.

No further information was released as police continue their investigation.

This is the 38th traffic-related fatality of 2023.

Pedestrian struck on I-10 West

In the second wreck, a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle about 11:15 p.m. Saturday on Interstate 10 West and Yarbrough Drive, officials said.

A 31-year-old man, whose name has not been released, was attempting to cross I-10 from south to north when he was struck by 2016 white Ford Explorer driven by a 22-year-old man on I-10 West, officials said. There were three passengers in the Ford.

The driver was unable to avoid striking the man as he attempted to cross I-10, officials said.

The man died due to the injuries he suffered in the accident, officials said.

No further information was released as police continue investigating the death.

This is the 39th traffic-related fatality of 2023, compared with 38 at this time last year.
