Two occupants had to be extricated from two separate cars involved in the crash, which happened shortly after 8 a.m. on Madison Avenue near Hackberry Lane, the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District said in tweets.

Two people were taken to hospitals in critical condition, according to Metro Fire. Two others had minor injuries, one of whom was taken to a hospital.

Photos posted by Metro Fire and the CHP showed at least three vehicles with severe front-end damage, including a black Ford Mustang that had also sustained significant rear-end damage.
