Two people reported injured in Deerfield campground fire; damages estimated at $200,000

Two people suffered burn injuries and there was estimated $200,000 in property damage after a fire broke out at McDermott's Lakefront Campground in Deerfield early Sunday morning, the Deerfield Fire Department posted on Facebook on Monday.The fire department was called to the campground at 8999 German Church Road after receiving a report of multiple campers and trailers on fire with possible entrapment at 5:36 a.m. Sunday.

As firefighters arrived on the scene, four campers were on fire and it was found that there were no occupants inside any of the campers, but two people from one of the campers were injured and transported by ambulance to Akron Children’s Hospital Burn Center. The extent of their injuries was unknown, the post said.

More: Fire burned 23 acres in Randolph Township Sunday nightThe cause of the fire is still under investigation by the Portage County Fire Investigative Unit and State Fire Marshal's office, but it is believed to have started in one camper and quickly spread to the adjoining campers on both sides due to their close proximity.

Nine fire departments from Portage and Mahoning counties responded to the fire.
