Two Petoskey lifters medal at respective powerlifting state finals

PETOSKEY — The newly built Petoskey weight room appears finally finished, though final approval and inspection is holding things up just a bit.

Once the scattered weights and equipment move back into its new home, there’s certain to be some Northmen lifters eager to put it to use.

Petoskey recently had four individuals make their way to the varsity and junior varsity state powerlifting state finals, with a pair coming home with hardware.

“It was a great season with these boys and the sport is continuing to grow,” lifting coach Earl Flynn said. “Hopefully we will be bring in more athletes for competitions next year.”

Cayo Vicente qualified into the varsity state finals in the 220-pound division and returned with a 10th place medal performance.

Tested on a big three of bench press, dead lift and squat, Vicente finished with a 1,110-pound total. He completed a 225-pound bench press, dead lifted 510 and had a 375-pound squat.

A trio of Northmen went to the junior varsity finals, which included Treaden Gallert, who earned a first place finish at 155 pounds.

Gallert benched 225, dead lifted 410 and had a squat of 315 pounds.

Spencer Fettig also competed at 155 pounds and placed eighth with the class with a 185-pound bench, 275 on the squat and a 365-pound dead lift.

The final competitor was Bradley Flynn within the JV 220 pound division. Flynn placed 11th overall with a 210 on the bench, 275 on the squad and a 350-pound dead lift.
