Two police officers injured in arrest of man armed with a knife

WOODBURY – Two police officers and a man accused of attacking them were taken to a local hospital after a violent incident here Friday.

The officers, whose names were not released, were released after treatment, according to the Gloucester County Prosecutor’s Office.

The suspect, Ilyas K. Ahmad of Camden, was treated and then taken to Salem County Jail.

What happened?

Woodbury police officers reported to a disturbance at a Glover Street home around 6:35 a.m., where they found a man assaulting a woman, the prosecutor’s office said.

Officers attempted to arrest the man, who had armed himself with a knife. The suspect resisted and two Woodbury officers were injured.

Police from Woodbury Heights and West Deptford also responded to the scene and helped take Ahmad into custody, the prosecutor’s office said.

Suspect faces multiple charges

Ahmad is accused of attempted murder on law enforcement and aggravated assault on police, among other crimes.

He also is charged with resisting arrest and attempting to disarm police, as well as weapons offenses, terroristic threats and aggravated assault.

The charges against Ahmad are only allegations. He has not been convicted in the case.
