Two rematches among contested Kewaunee County races in the April election

KEWAUNEE COUNTY - A couple of rematches are among the small handful of contested races for local government that will be on the ballot in the April 4 elections in Kewaunee County.

Primary elections in Wisconsin are scheduled for Feb. 21, and while no primaries are needed to narrow the field in any of the county races, there is a four-way primary for a seat on the Wisconsin Supreme Court that could possibly alter the ideological makeup of what's supposed to be the nonpartisan court.

The race has two candidates considered to be liberal (Everett Mitchell, Janet Protasiewicz) and two considered to be conservative (Jennifer Dorow, Daniel Kelly) vying to replace the retiring Patricia Roggensack, who's generally ruled with the court's conservative bloc. Kelly was appointed to the state Supreme Court in 2016 but lost his reelection bid, while the other three are circuit court judges in Waukesha (Dorow), Milwaukee (Protasiewicz) and Dane (Mitchell) counties. The top two vote-getters will face each other in the April election.

Locally, the top position in the Town of West Kewaunee is being contested, with Chair Dan Kassner being challenged for a third straight election by Milt Swagel. Kassner defeated Swagel for the chair in 2019 and '21, but Swagel since has successfully won a seat on the County Board and is currently serving a second term there. The town chair seat is for two years.

The other rematch will take place in the city of Kewaunee's Third District, where Ald. Robin Nelson will face off with Joe Mills for a seat on the Common Council. Mills served as the district's alder until Nelson defeated him in the 2021 spring election. The term of the seat is for two years.

In other contested races:

Five candidates, including two incumbents, are running for three trustee seats on the Luxemburg Village Board. Running against incumbent trustees Dan Rueckl and Ronald Tlachac are Mike Faltynski, Mark Fort and Bob Seidl. Also in Luxemburg, current trustee Dan Porath is running unopposed to replace village President Jack Seidl, who is not seeking reelection. All terms are for two years.

Both supervisor seats are up for grabs in the Town of Lincoln. Current Supervisor 1 Jordan Nowak is being challenged by David Routhieaux, and incumbent Supervisor 2 Brent Eisenman will face Tony Strnad. Both terms are for two years.
